What is Hypnosis?

When you went in search of Hypnosis some of you or else most of you might have assumed a wrong conception that it is “mind control” which it is not.

The common misconception about Hypnosis

Why should you learn about the common misconception first? Because we learn from our mistakes. Hence if you know what is wrong first, then you are more likely to understand correctly what Hypnosis is all about. Hypnosis seems to be of types:

1) Hypnosis which is not mind control
2) Mesmerism which is said to be mind control (See for the article on Mesmerism)

Here we are going to talk about the first category and not the second which is not an assured one. There are some ways of sending subliminal messages too which is scientifically proven. But you are about to learn the skill what most Hypnotherapists apply.

Now let me relate to you a small example of the life of Robbin Blair who discovered Self Hypnosis for the first time. During the time he was studying Hypnotherapy in College he was asked to come on to the stage by his professor to perform a small Hypnosis show. After he went to the stage his professor told him to forget the number six when he was in the subconscious state. After returning to conscious state, he was asked to count from one to ten. He started counting and the numbers he pronounced were: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9 and 10. But the key point here is that Blair could actually remember each and every incident which happened during the time he was hypnotised. But yet he forgot six. Why did that happen?

Though you reach the subconscious state of mind during the time you are hypnotised you are totally aware of what is happening and also in a very calm state. You cannot be directed to do a thing that you actually don’t want to do. Hence among so many definitions for hypnosis let me give a common one which clearly states its meaning.

“Being hypnotised is the state of mind where you have reached your subconscious mind (Inner mind); fully aware of the surrounding, enjoying a sense of calmness and more importantly in a more easily suggestible state”
